The Secret of Kite Hill (Li & Lu Book 1) Kindle Edition
Do you let your kids walk home from school? It's just a few blocks, right? What lurks in the shadows? In the bushes? Or scarier yet, under the bushes?
Or is it all just happy-go-lucky Huckleberry Finn and exploring and adventuring in your own neighborhood? When do you know the difference? Maybe your kids know. Maybe they don't. How will you learn?
It began as a simple walk home, the same one we did every day after school. But our dog's ball went into something of a hole, or was it a cave? Maybe a tunnel. But are there tunnels in the city? The ball was pretty close to the entrance, but just far enough to be a little spooky. Should we just forget it?
WARNING TO PARENTS: there are some questionable parenting decisions in this book. It is not intended as a parenting handbook. There's a fine line between making the right decision and making the fun decision. When to choose which? How much do you involve your children in daily decisions? What if they involve danger? But what if your kids think it might be fun? You get the idea. Maybe I need a disclaimer ... ;-)
You know in scary movies when you yell, "Don't go in there!" We went in. Yeah, I know. Ask your 8-year old why.

This would make a great book to read together with children.

From the Author
Then we did.
What you're holding in your hands is a dream come true for a father who wanted to "do a creative project" with his sons.
The boys dreamed up the story and I wrote it down. At night, I would read it back to them and we'd make changes and talk about the next scene.
I knew we were on the right path when my 8-year-old asked, "Well, what happens next?"
From the Inside Flap
Does "adventure" need to include poisonous snakes, ferocious lions, or saving the world?
Adventure is what you make it.
It's up to us (and our imaginations) to make what started out as a simple walk home from school into an adventure the kids will never forget.
Thanks for reading.

If you did, the absolute best thing you can do to help us is spread the word.
The easiest and most effective way to help do that is by leaving a review right on the Amazon site.
Thank you so very much for reading!

About the Author
The two boys and I wrote this book together.
They were the creative editors and creators and I put together the final words. They lived it, created it, edited it and made it happen.
We talked about the storyline on the way home from school, at night while reading through each chapter after dinner, and finally opening up to their dad like never before.
It was a process, a challenge, and a joy.
Would I recommend it parents? To kids? Yes and yes.
Is it easy? Not always.
Did the kids jump for joy to "work on the book project"? Yeah, not often, but once I got them into it, they were into it.
We did it.
We published it.
The boys were thrilled.
Can't wait for the next one.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2017Not Kindle Unlimited, found it on a freebie day. My ratings for kids' books is based on a few things, but still pretty much what the other ratings are; cute without being cutesy, reasonably good writing, and helps if freebie or on ku but that's personal preference of a binge reader. Rarely bother with reading anyone else's reviews, but noticed one that said girls would not like it {definitely don't agree, we know boys are stinky and weird, proves that and gives us a reason to laugh about them} and another that said there should be a second part to this {agree}.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A fairly very well written children's book. It wasn’t very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. Well I’m not sure I grasped the full story content. That said I will rate it at 3/5 stars.
Thank you for the free Instafreebie; Author; PDF book

- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2017This was a genuinely enjoyable read. I loved that it was written by a family and while it is primarily a children's story, I think that many adults would enjoy it as well. I disagree with the reviewer that said it wasn't for girls. Even though there aren't any girls in the story, it is about adventure and excitement and the unknown - something many young girls enjoy as well ( I was one once and have raised another.). The story flowed well and I really enjoyed the adult perspective of questioning oneself and not wanting to admit to the fear of the unknown in front of your kids. I would love to read a follow-up that addressed the mysteries introduced in this story. While it was not a cliff hanger, and had a HEA, there was much left to explore at a future time. I hope the author and his kids go there.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2017A nice short tale for boys (girls wouldn't identify with the plot). Its two salient characteristics are the constant suspense and the well-judged use of vocabulary. The suspense carries the tale along and in the end leaves the reader to ponder about unresolved mysteries. The vocabulary is good, mature, but not excessively adult Anglo-Saxon. The author has good judgment as to what words to teach his readers. It stretches them to just the right degree. I recommend if for boys 6-12 - I used to be one.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2014My 9 year old son read this book and loved it. It's easy to read for that age (but not too easy), short and funny. He especially liked, no surprise here, the parts that were written by Lu (fart destroyer of aliens) and Li. I read the book as well and enjoyed all the introspective musings of the father taking his sons and dog on an adventure, doubting his decisions all the way but happy he did it after all. I definitely recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2014This little book was a delight to read. It had me laughing out loud a few times, and wondering what twists and turns were coming next.
Most of all, it made me want to have an adventure with my kids... even though I don't have any yet. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2018This book is very funny and I like it. I think all kids should read it because it is a good book. It is a cool book, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2018This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to another. It’s nice he did this in collaboration with his sons.
This is the first book I’ve listened to by these narrators and I would listen to another. His kids narrated their parts of the story. Editing is a little lacking and so is cadence but it makes it sound like it is truly what it is ... the kids reading a story they’ve made up.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review
