Pick a book, any book. Read page one.

We’re staying in a friend of a friend’s house that must have thousands of books. It’s an old house with more character than Meryl Streep. We’re only spending one night, but I think I could spend a year. It’s going to be hard to leave tomorrow.

We got home late and it’s just the boys and I and I didn’t want to go right to sleep.

How do you begin traditions? Something that you do with your family every year. Who thinks it up? Who keeps it going? Just start. See what happens.

Before I lost their attention, there were just so many books. What could we do with them? There was a front room with cozy chairs and something of a love seat. The whole place was a throwback at least 50 years. All as if it hadn’t been touched in 50 years.

“OK, let’s all read page one of whatever book you pick up. Just read it to yourself. Then we can tell each other what it was about. OK?”

I was surprised, but they went for it.

Li got To Kill a Mockingbird, Lu got something about London streets and I got For Whom the Bell Tolls. We all read in silence for a few minutes and then explained what we had read.

That was it. Nothing earth shattering. Just trying to make every night a little special, just add a little spice, just a little something to remind us that we’re alive, that each day, that each night of our lives is a little different if we choose to make it so.

  • Possible: come home to your one night in a new place, go to sleep.
  • Impossible: force memories.
  • Repossible: roll the dice, try something new, at least give it a shot.
