When you’re seven years old, you say things like, “I’m going to be a fireman.” When you’re 20, you might say, “I’m going to be a doctor.” At some point in your life, you’re going to look within and realize who you really are. You might not share it with anyone–not a living soul. At all. Ever. You might share it with everyone. You might not become a fireman or a doctor, but this is beyond a profession or a career. This is who you are. You know it’s there and you know it lives inside of you. It’s up to you whether or not you let it out into the wild.

I know what is within me, even if you can’t see it yet.

I don’t want to define it. I don’t have the capacity to define it. I don’t know what it means to know who you are. I don’t want an explanation, I certainly don’t want excuses. In fact, I don’t even want to know who you are. What I do want is for you to know who you are and know that you will, someday, sooner or later, become who you know you are.

Does that make sense? No? Good. Keep trying. It’s in there, you just need to look around a bit more. Take your time.

I have something more important than courage. I have patience.

Patience is perhaps more important than courage, but courage and patience are both required to get backstage. It takes courage to figure out who you are, but more courage to admit that’s who you really are. Looking to change who you really are? Even more courage. And more patience. Become who you really are? You’ll want to get back in line for seconds. And bring another tray.

  1. Possible: know what you are.
  2. Impossible: be fearless to become who you are.
  3. Repossible: become what you know you are.

I’ve taken this from a positive perspective, but it could also be that you become what you know you are, but you don’t like who you are. Then what? Can people change who they are? Is a person just who they are, that’s that? Again, what does it mean: who you are? If you don’t like it, what are you going to do about it?

This sounds maybe a little simplistic, but I think it might be easier to look inside, see that you don’t like who you are and change that person than it would be to look inside, see who you want to be, be happy with that future self, but not have the will to become that person.
